Security Guard Jobs in India 2026: Licence Rules, Shifts and Pay Ranges

By IshanOctober 8, 2026010 Mins Read

Security guards are everywhere in modern India: at apartment gates, office towers, malls, hospitals, factories, banks, schools, warehouses and construction sites. The private security industry employs millions of people and is one of the largest sources of formal employment for men and women with a 10th pass or less, including ex-servicemen and rural migrants.

This guide is for anyone considering a security guard job in 2026. It explains the licensing rules under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, commonly called PSARA, the training you must complete, who is eligible, how shifts and duties work, what pay to expect with PF and ESIC, what documents to keep ready and how to avoid the fake agencies that cheat job seekers.

Pay figures given here are indicative and vary by state minimum wage, city, site type, employer and experience.

How the Private Security Sector Is Regulated

Under PSARA, every private security agency must hold a licence from the state controlling authority, usually the home department or the police, and must employ only guards who have completed prescribed training and police verification. The agency is responsible for issuing a photo identity card to each guard, paying at least the state minimum wage for the skill category, and depositing provident fund and ESIC contributions.

For a job seeker, this means two things. First, you should work only for a licensed agency or directly for a company that employs its own security staff. Second, you have a legal right to minimum wages, weekly rest, overtime pay, PF, ESIC and an identity card. Knowing this protects you from exploitation.

Main Types of Security Guard Roles

  • Unarmed security guard: Access control, visitor register, patrolling, CCTV monitoring and emergency response at residential and commercial premises. This is the most common entry role.
  • Armed security guard: Guards with a valid arms licence, usually ex-servicemen or ex-police, posted at banks, cash vans, ATMs and high-value sites.
  • Security supervisor: Manages a team of guards at a site, prepares duty rosters, handles incidents and reports to the client.
  • Lady security guard: Frisking and access control for women at malls, metro stations, hospitals, schools and events.
  • Fire and safety guard: Guards with additional fire-fighting and first-aid training for industrial plants, hospitals and IT parks.
  • Gunman or bouncer: Personal security and event security roles requiring specific physical standards and, for gunmen, an arms licence.

Eligibility and Training Rules

Age: 18 to 65 years under PSARA, with most agencies hiring guards between 21 and 50 years for regular duty. Ex-servicemen are preferred for armed and supervisory roles.

Education: No fixed rule in the Act, but most agencies ask for a 10th pass for guards and a 12th pass or graduation for supervisors. Ability to read and write in the local language and basic English is expected for maintaining registers.

Physical and medical standards: Agencies generally require a minimum height of about 160 to 165 cm for men and 150 to 155 cm for women, proportionate weight, good eyesight with or without glasses, normal hearing and no major health conditions. A medical fitness certificate is often required.

Training: PSARA requires guards to complete a training course of about 100 hours for fresh candidates and a shorter refresher for ex-servicemen, covering conduct, access control, fire safety, first aid, emergency response, basic law, crowd control and communication. Training is conducted by the agency or an accredited institute. Skill India certification under the security sector skill council is increasingly asked for.

Police verification and character: Every guard must undergo police verification of antecedents. A pending criminal case or conviction for a serious offence disqualifies a candidate.

Documents to Keep Ready

  • Aadhaar card and PAN card
  • 10th or higher certificate and mark sheet
  • Address proof such as voter ID, ration card or utility bill
  • Police verification certificate or consent form
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Training certificate, if already completed
  • Discharge book and service certificate for ex-servicemen
  • Arms licence for armed roles
  • Bank passbook for salary and PF, and a UAN if you have worked before
  • Recent passport-size photographs

Never hand over original documents to an agency for keeping. Show originals for verification and give only self-attested copies.

Shifts, Duties and Working Conditions

Security is a round-the-clock service, so guards work in shifts. The standard arrangement is three 8-hour shifts: morning, evening and night, rotated weekly or fortnightly. Many sites still run 12-hour shifts, in which case the extra four hours must be paid as overtime at double the ordinary rate under labour law. A weekly off is a legal right, though some guards choose to work on their off day for extra pay.

Duties depend on the site. At a residential society, a guard manages the gate, records visitors and deliveries, controls vehicle entry and patrols at night. At an office or mall, duties include baggage checks, CCTV monitoring, fire alarm response and crowd management. Industrial sites add material gate passes and vehicle checks. The job requires alertness, politeness, a neat uniform and the ability to stay calm in disputes.

Pay, Overtime and Statutory Benefits

Wages are tied to the state minimum wage for the relevant skill category: unskilled or semi-skilled for guards and skilled for supervisors and armed guards. Metro cities and industrial areas pay more. Gross monthly pay includes basic wage, dearness allowance, overtime and sometimes a site or night allowance. Deductions are the employee share of PF and ESIC. The ranges below are indicative only and vary by state, city, employer and experience.

Role Typical Shift Indicative Gross Monthly (INR) Notes
Unarmed guard (8-hour shift) Rotating 8 hours ₹13,000 to ₹20,000 Higher in metro and industrial sites
Unarmed guard (12-hour shift with overtime) Day or night 12 hours ₹18,000 to ₹26,000 Overtime must be paid at double rate
Lady guard Usually day shift ₹13,000 to ₹20,000 Malls, metro, hospitals
Armed guard or gunman 8 to 12 hours ₹22,000 to ₹35,000 Arms licence required
Security supervisor Fixed shift ₹20,000 to ₹32,000 Experience and 12th pass needed

All money figures in this security guard jobs in india 2026 article are indicative and may change. Check the exact salary, allowances and deductions with the employer in writing, or through the first portal listed under Helpful Links, before you accept an offer.

Before joining, confirm in writing the basic wage, overtime rate, weekly off, PF and ESIC deduction, uniform supply, accommodation if promised and the date of salary payment. Check your PF passbook after a few months to make sure contributions are actually being deposited.

Step-by-Step: Getting a Genuine Security Job

  1. Find licensed agencies in your city through the state police or home department’s list of PSARA licence holders, or through the National Career Service portal and Skill India training centres.
  2. Visit the agency office in person, confirm the licence number displayed there and ask for the sites where they deploy guards.
  3. Complete the training and police verification. Any training fee should be modest, with a receipt, and many agencies recover it from salary rather than demanding cash in advance.
  4. Submit document copies, sign an appointment letter and obtain your photo identity card.
  5. Report to the site in uniform, learn the standing orders and registers from the supervisor and keep a copy of your duty roster.
  6. Check your first salary slip for basic wage, overtime, PF and ESIC entries.

Scam Warning Signs for Security Job Seekers

  • Advertisements promising ₹30,000 to ₹50,000 a month for guard jobs with a registration, uniform or ID card fee payable in advance through a personal UPI handle.
  • Agencies without a visible PSARA licence number or a proper office, operating only from a phone number or a messaging app.
  • Fake offer letters from well-known companies, malls or airports asking for a security deposit, medical fee or training fee before joining.
  • Calls asking for an OTP, PIN or bank details to “activate your guard ID” or “process your salary account”.
  • Pressure to pay quickly because “the site is being allotted today”.
  • Demands to deposit your original certificates or Aadhaar card with the agency.
  • Offers for overseas security jobs that charge large visa or processing fees; registered recruitment agents and genuine employers never charge the worker for the visa.

Verify the agency licence with the state controlling authority and visit the office before paying anything. If you have paid money or shared an OTP, report it to your bank and the local police.

Career Growth in Security

A guard who is punctual, well-groomed and good with registers can become a head guard or site supervisor within two to three years. Supervisors move to assistant security officer and security officer roles with larger clients, especially after completing fire safety, first aid and CCTV certifications. Ex-servicemen often rise to area or branch manager positions. Guards can also build on their experience to join corporate facility management, airport security screening or government security forces through the regular recruitment exams if within the age limit.

To grow faster, keep a clean attendance record, learn to write clear incident reports in the local language and English, and ask the agency for fire safety, first aid and CCTV operator training. Many clients ask for supervisors who can use a computer for visitor management systems and email, so basic computer skills are a real advantage. Guards who complete a 12th pass through open schooling become eligible for supervisor and officer posts that pay a fixed monthly salary with fewer night shifts. Experience at hospitals, airports and industrial plants is valued highly when applying to larger agencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PSARA training certificate compulsory?

Yes. Licensed agencies must ensure every guard has completed the prescribed training before deployment. Ex-servicemen and ex-police get a shorter refresher course.

Can I work 12-hour shifts every day?

Labour law allows extra hours only as paid overtime at double the ordinary rate and within weekly limits. If you are made to work 12 hours daily without overtime pay, the agency is breaking the law.

Are PF and ESIC compulsory for security guards?

Yes, for agencies covered under the EPF and ESIC Acts, which includes nearly all licensed security agencies. Check your UAN passbook regularly to confirm deposits.

Can women work in security jobs?

Yes. Demand for lady guards is strong at malls, hospitals, schools, metro stations and events, generally on day shifts, and the pay and benefits are the same as for men.

What is the retirement age for a guard?

PSARA sets an upper age of 65 years, but most agencies deploy guards up to 58 or 60 years at regular sites. Older guards are often placed at residential societies with lighter duties.

Before You Join

A security guard job is a genuine path to formal employment with legal protections, provided you work for a licensed agency. Complete your training, keep your documents in order, confirm wages and overtime in writing and check that PF and ESIC are being deposited.

Stay away from anyone who asks for money or your original papers, and build your record towards supervisor and officer roles.
