Oman Salary Guide 2026: Typical Pay Ranges by Job Type and Experience

By IshanOctober 7, 202609 Mins Read

The first question every Indian job seeker asks about Oman is simple: how much will I earn? The honest answer is that it depends on the job, your experience, the employer and what is included with the salary. A cleaner on OMR 120 with free food and lodging may save more than a clerk on OMR 250 who pays his own rent. This guide puts the numbers side by side so that you can judge an offer properly.

All figures here are indicative monthly ranges in Omani rials with a rough rupee equivalent, based on common market practice in 2026. One rial is worth roughly 220 rupees. Actual pay varies by employer, city, sector and experience, and changes over time. Use the ranges to spot an offer that is unusually low or suspiciously high, not as a promise of what you will get.

How Pay Is Structured in Oman

Most Omani contracts split pay into a basic salary and allowances. Common allowances are housing, transport and food. Manual workers usually receive accommodation, transport and sometimes food in kind rather than as money, while office and professional staff receive cash allowances. Overtime, commission and site allowances come on top.

The split matters because end-of-service gratuity, annual leave pay and some other entitlements are normally calculated on basic salary. A contract with a low basic and high allowances looks the same each month but gives less at the end. Always ask for the basic and allowances to be written separately, and compare offers on the total package including what is provided in kind.

Entry-Level and Manual Jobs

These roles need little formal education and form the largest group of Indian workers in Oman. Pay is modest, but accommodation and transport are almost always provided, and overtime adds to earnings.

  • Cleaner, helper, general labourer: OMR 100 to 160 (roughly Rs 22,000 to 35,000).
  • Security guard: OMR 130 to 220 (roughly Rs 29,000 to 48,000).
  • Warehouse helper, picker, packer: OMR 120 to 200 (roughly Rs 26,000 to 44,000).
  • Kitchen helper, room attendant, waiter: OMR 130 to 230 (roughly Rs 29,000 to 51,000).
  • Light vehicle or delivery driver: OMR 150 to 250 (roughly Rs 33,000 to 55,000).
  • Sales assistant, cashier: OMR 150 to 260 (roughly Rs 33,000 to 57,000).

Skilled Trades and Technical Roles

Tradesmen with ITI certificates or proven experience earn noticeably more, and overtime on active projects can lift monthly income by a third or more.

  • Mason, carpenter, steel fixer, painter: OMR 160 to 260 (roughly Rs 35,000 to 57,000).
  • Electrician, plumber, AC technician, pipe fitter: OMR 180 to 320 (roughly Rs 40,000 to 70,000).
  • Welder, scaffolder with certificates: OMR 220 to 380 (roughly Rs 48,000 to 84,000).
  • Heavy truck, tanker or bus driver: OMR 200 to 350 (roughly Rs 44,000 to 77,000).
  • Forklift, crane or excavator operator: OMR 180 to 350 (roughly Rs 40,000 to 77,000).
  • Mechanic, auto electrician, machine technician: OMR 200 to 400 (roughly Rs 44,000 to 88,000).

Office, Healthcare and Supervisory Roles

Educated workers in offices, clinics and supervisory posts earn higher pay, usually with cash allowances rather than camp accommodation. Some of these roles qualify for family sponsorship.

  • Data entry operator, office clerk: OMR 180 to 280 (roughly Rs 40,000 to 62,000).
  • Receptionist, admin assistant, HR assistant: OMR 220 to 350 (roughly Rs 48,000 to 77,000).
  • Nursing assistant, lab or pharmacy assistant: OMR 180 to 350 (roughly Rs 40,000 to 77,000).
  • Accounts assistant: OMR 250 to 400 (roughly Rs 55,000 to 88,000).
  • Accountant, site supervisor, foreman, store supervisor: OMR 350 to 650 (roughly Rs 77,000 to 1,43,000).
  • Engineer, senior accountant, registered nurse: OMR 500 to 1,200 (roughly Rs 1,10,000 to 2,64,000).

How Experience Changes Pay

Experience is rewarded in Oman, especially Gulf experience. The table below shows how pay for the same role tends to rise with experience. Ranges are indicative and vary by employer and city.

Role Fresher (OMR) 3 to 5 years (OMR) 8 years and above (OMR)
Electrician 170 to 220 220 to 300 300 to 420 as senior or chargehand
Light vehicle driver 150 to 180 180 to 230 230 to 300 as heavy or fleet driver
Waiter 140 to 180 180 to 240 250 to 400 as captain or supervisor
Accounts assistant 220 to 280 280 to 400 400 to 700 as accountant
Security guard 130 to 170 170 to 220 220 to 350 as supervisor

All money figures in this oman salary guide article are indicative and may change. Check the exact salary, allowances and deductions with the employer in writing, or through the first portal listed under Helpful Links, before you accept an offer.

In rupee terms, every OMR 50 increase is roughly Rs 11,000 a month. Moving from fresher to senior in most trades roughly doubles take-home pay over eight to ten years.

Overtime, Commission and Other Extras

Oman labour law sets normal working hours and requires overtime to be paid at a higher rate than the normal hourly wage, with a higher rate again for night work and rest days. In construction, logistics and security, overtime often adds 20 to 50 percent to basic pay. Some contracts include a fixed overtime allowance instead of hourly payment, so check which applies to you.

Retail and sales roles add commission tied to targets, which can double a basic salary in a good month and add nothing in a bad one. Hospitality roles often share a service charge. Drivers may get trip or delivery incentives. Remote site work in Duqm or desert oil fields usually adds a site allowance. Treat these extras as variable, and judge an offer first on the guaranteed basic and allowances.

Deductions and Costs to Expect

Oman does not charge personal income tax on salaries, which is a major advantage compared with many countries. However, some costs reduce your take-home pay. If accommodation is not provided, rent for a shared room in Muscat can be OMR 40 to 80 a month. Food costs OMR 30 to 60 a month if you cook yourself. Phone and internet cost around OMR 5 to 15. Sending money to India has small transfer charges.

Employers may legally deduct fines for traffic offences by drivers, cash shortages by cashiers, or damage caused by negligence, but these must be explained and documented. Deductions for the visa, labour clearance, medical test in Oman or resident card are not allowed, because these are the employer’s responsibility. If such deductions appear on your salary slip, raise it in writing and, if needed, complain to the Oman Ministry of Labour.

How Much Can You Save Each Month

Savings depend more on what is included than on the headline salary. A labourer on OMR 140 with free camp accommodation, transport and food can send home OMR 100 to 120, or about Rs 22,000 to 26,000, every month. A cashier on OMR 220 with a shared room provided but no food may send home OMR 150, or about Rs 33,000. An accounts assistant on OMR 350 who rents a shared flat and cooks at home may send home OMR 200 to 250, or about Rs 44,000 to 55,000.

The best way to save is to keep fixed costs low in the first year, avoid loans and instalment purchases, send money monthly through a bank or licensed exchange rather than keeping cash, and track spending with a simple notebook.

Reading an Offer Letter Carefully

Before you accept any Oman salary, check the following points in writing.

  • Basic salary stated separately from allowances.
  • Housing, food and transport: provided in kind, paid as allowance, or not provided.
  • Overtime rate, or the fixed overtime allowance and the hours it covers.
  • Weekly rest day, annual leave days and whether leave is paid.
  • Medical insurance for you, and for family if applicable.
  • Return air ticket at the end of the contract and on annual leave.
  • Probation period and whether allowances start only after probation.
  • Contract length and the end-of-service benefit calculation.

Scam Warning Signs Around Salaries

Fake job offers often use unrealistic salaries as bait. Watch for these signs.

  • A salary two or three times the normal range for the role, such as OMR 500 for a cleaner or OMR 800 for a fresher driver.
  • A promise of a high salary combined with a demand for visa fees, processing fees or a deposit before the visa is issued.
  • Payment requested into a personal UPI ID or a private bank account.
  • An offer letter without basic and allowance details, without a company address, or sent from a free email address.
  • Requests for your bank OTP, card PIN or online banking password.
  • Pressure to pay today for a job that pays far above market.

Genuine employers do not charge the worker for the visa. Use registered recruitment agents only, keep copies of your contract, and verify the employer by video call. If you have paid and suspect fraud, stop further payments, keep every message and receipt, and report it to your bank and the local police.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there income tax on salaries in Oman?

No personal income tax is charged on salaries in Oman at present. What you earn is yours, apart from any lawful deductions explained in your contract. Rules can change, so confirm with your employer.

What is a good salary for an Indian fresher in Oman?

For a manual worker, OMR 140 to 200 with accommodation and transport is reasonable. For a graduate in an office role, OMR 250 to 350 with a housing allowance is a fair start. Anything far above these ranges for a fresher deserves careful checking.

How is end-of-service gratuity calculated?

It is normally based on basic salary and the number of years completed, and paid when you leave after finishing your contract. Because it uses basic pay, a higher basic salary is better for you in the long run.

Can I negotiate salary before signing?

Yes, politely. Ask about the basic and allowances split, overtime and leave rather than only the total figure. Experienced tradesmen and office staff have more room to negotiate than freshers.

Why does the same job pay differently at two companies?

Company size, sector, location and what is included explain most differences. A large contractor on an oil project pays more than a small building firm, and a Muscat employer often pays more than one in a small town.

Final Thoughts

Oman salaries are modest for manual work and comfortable for skilled and office roles, but the real measure is what you keep after rent and food. Compare offers on basic pay, allowances and what is provided in kind, confirm every term in writing, and be suspicious of any salary that looks too good. With no income tax and sensible spending, a few years in Oman can build real savings.
