Bahrain Driver Visa Steps 2026: Documents, Medicals and Timelines

By IshanOctober 18, 2026010 Mins Read

Driving is one of the most common jobs for Indian workers in Bahrain. Companies need light vehicle drivers for deliveries and sales routes, heavy vehicle drivers for construction and logistics, bus drivers for staff transport and schools, and personal drivers for families. The job pays better than helper work and does not require a degree, but the visa process has more steps than most other trades because a Bahrain driving licence is involved.

This guide walks through the process in order: eligibility, the documents to prepare in India, the pre departure medical, how the employer obtains the work permit from the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), the entry visa and ticket, what happens in the first weeks after arrival, how the Bahrain driving licence is obtained, typical timelines at each stage, indicative pay, and the scams that target drivers.

Who Can Apply for Driver Jobs in Bahrain

Employers generally look for men aged 23 to 45 with a valid Indian driving licence held for at least two to three years, clean vision and general health, and at least basic English for reading road signs and delivery addresses. Light vehicle drivers need an LMV licence. Heavy vehicle, trailer and bus drivers need the matching heavy licence and usually proof of experience with that class of vehicle. Some employers ask for Gulf experience for heavy roles, but many hire first time drivers for light vehicles.

Knowledge of Bahrain’s roads is not expected at the start. Employers value calm driving, punctuality, honesty with cash collections and a tidy appearance, especially for sales and family driver roles. A record of accidents or licence suspension in India should be disclosed, because it usually comes out at the local licence stage.

Documents to Prepare in India

  • Passport with at least six months validity and blank pages
  • Indian driving licence, valid, with the correct vehicle class
  • International driving permit, if the employer asks for one
  • Educational certificate, usually 10th pass or above
  • Experience certificates from previous driving jobs, if any
  • Passport size photographs with white background
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Medical fitness report from a Gulf approved medical centre
  • Signed offer letter and employment contract copy

Make sure the name and date of birth on your passport, licence and certificates match exactly. Small spelling differences cause delays at the permit stage. If your licence is in a regional language, get an English translation or an international driving permit from the regional transport office before applying.

Step One: Selection and Offer Letter

Most driver recruitment runs through registered Indian recruitment agents working on a demand letter from a Bahrain employer. Selection usually involves a short interview, a check of your licence and sometimes a practical driving test in India. After selection you should receive a written offer letter stating the job, basic salary, allowances, accommodation, hours, overtime and contract length. Read it fully and keep a copy.

At this stage the agent may ask for the legal service charge. A registered agent can collect only the limited fee fixed by the Government of India and must issue a receipt. The employer pays the permit, visa and usually the ticket, so no other payment should be requested. Keep copies of the receipt, the offer and the contract, and do not resign from your current job until the work permit is confirmed.

Step Two: Pre Departure Medical Test

Gulf countries require a medical fitness test at an approved medical centre in India before the visa is issued. The test usually includes a general examination, chest X-ray, blood tests for infectious diseases, urine tests and an eyesight check. For drivers, vision is checked carefully. Results normally take two to five working days. If you are found unfit, the process stops, so disclose any health condition honestly to the agent before paying for the test.

Keep the medical report safe. You will undergo another medical test after arrival in Bahrain as part of the residence process.

Step Three: LMRA Work Permit

The employer applies to the LMRA for a work permit in your name, under its own commercial registration and occupation quota. The LMRA checks the employer’s records and your passport details. Once approved, the employer pays the permit fees. The permit is the document that makes everything else possible, and no genuine visa can be issued without it. Ask the employer or agent to share the permit details so that you can confirm them through the LMRA enquiry services with your passport number.

Stage Who does it Typical time
Selection and offer letter Employer and agent 1 to 3 weeks
Pre departure medical You, at an approved centre 2 to 5 working days
LMRA work permit Employer 1 to 4 weeks
Entry visa and ticket Employer 3 to 10 days
Arrival medical, CPR card and licence Employer and you 3 to 8 weeks after arrival

These timelines are typical, not guaranteed. Attestation of certificates, public holidays and document corrections can add weeks.

Step Four: Entry Visa and Travel

After the permit, the employer obtains the entry visa, which is usually sent to you electronically through the agent. Check that the name, passport number and sponsor name match your documents and the offer letter. The employer normally arranges and pays for the ticket. Travel with your passport, visa printout, offer letter, contract copy, medical report, original licence and certificates, and a small amount of money for the first days.

Step Five: Arrival Formalities

In the first weeks your employer should arrange a medical test in Bahrain, your Central Population Registry (CPR) card, which is the national identity card, and your work permit card. Your fingerprints and photograph are recorded. Confirm that the sponsor name on the permit matches the company that hired you. Open a bank account in your own name so that salary is paid under the Wage Protection System. Keep your passport; the employer may need it briefly for processing but cannot hold it.

Step Six: Bahrain Driving Licence

Driving on Bahrain’s roads requires a Bahrain licence. An Indian licence is generally not converted directly, so most drivers go through the local traffic authority process: an eye test, a theory test on signs and rules, and a practical driving test, sometimes after lessons at a driving school. Some employers arrange and pay for this; others expect the driver to pay and recover the cost from salary. Confirm who pays in the offer letter. Heavy vehicle and bus licences involve additional tests and may require a period on a light licence first.

Until the Bahrain licence is issued, employers usually assign the new driver as a helper or assistant, so the first month’s duties may differ from the job title. Use this time to learn the main routes, the location of fuel stations and the company’s delivery areas, and to study the local traffic signs, which follow international patterns but include Arabic text.

Indicative Pay and What to Confirm

As a rough guide, light vehicle and delivery drivers in Bahrain earn BHD 160 to 250 a month (roughly ₹37,000 to ₹57,000), heavy vehicle and trailer drivers BHD 220 to 350 (roughly ₹50,000 to ₹80,000), bus drivers BHD 200 to 300 (roughly ₹46,000 to ₹69,000), and family or executive drivers BHD 180 to 300 plus food and housing (roughly ₹41,000 to ₹69,000). These figures are indicative only and vary by employer, city and experience.

Confirm in writing: whether accommodation and food are provided, how overtime is calculated for long routes, whether a mobile phone and fuel card are supplied, who pays traffic fines caused by the driver, who pays the Bahrain licence costs, and how many days of annual leave you get. Delivery drivers who collect cash should ask for a written cash handling policy.

Working Hours and Conditions

Bahrain law limits normal work to eight hours a day and forty eight hours a week, with overtime at a minimum of 125 percent during the day and 150 percent at night or on rest days. Delivery and sales drivers often work long days, so make sure hours are recorded. Summer heat makes vehicle air conditioning essential; report faults in writing. Traffic rules are enforced strictly with cameras, and fines for speeding or phone use are high, so drive carefully from the first day.

Scam Warning Signs for Driver Applicants

Driver jobs are heavily targeted by fraud because demand is high. Be careful if anyone asks for a visa fee, licence conversion fee, driving test fee, vehicle deposit, uniform deposit or ticket advance before you travel, or asks you to pay through a personal UPI ID. Genuine employers pay for the LMRA work permit and visa. Fake offer letters often promise BHD 400 or more for a light driver, use free email addresses and show no commercial registration number.

Never share bank OTPs or card PINs. Verify the employer’s commercial registration, confirm the LMRA permit in your name before paying any legal agent charge, use only registered agents and keep copies of the contract. If you have been cheated, report it to your bank and the local police.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive in Bahrain on my Indian licence?

Not for employment. You will need a Bahrain licence, which usually means passing local theory and practical tests. Your Indian licence is still needed as proof of experience and for the application.

Who pays for the Bahrain driving licence?

It depends on the contract. Many employers pay and some deduct the cost in instalments. Get the arrangement in writing before you travel.

How long does the whole driver visa process take?

From selection to travel, usually four to ten weeks. Getting the Bahrain licence after arrival can take another one to two months.

Is a heavy licence from India accepted?

It is accepted as proof of experience, but you will still need a Bahrain heavy licence, which has its own tests. Some employers require a period of driving light vehicles first.

What if I fail the Bahrain driving test?

You can retake it after a waiting period. Employers usually allow a second attempt. Never pay anyone who promises to arrange a pass without a test.

Final Thoughts

The Bahrain driver visa process is longer than for other trades because of the local licence, but it is clear and well regulated. Prepare your documents carefully, pass the medical honestly, confirm the permit before paying anyone, and get the licence arrangements in writing.

Patience in the first two months pays off with a job that offers steady income and a path to heavy vehicle, supervisor and fleet roles.
