Anganwadi Worker Jobs in India 2026: Eligibility, Duties and Honorarium Ranges

By IshanOctober 12, 2026010 Mins Read

Anganwadi centres are the front line of India’s child nutrition and early education programme. Run under the Integrated Child Development Services scheme, now part of the Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 programme, each centre serves a village or an urban ward with supplementary nutrition, pre-school education, growth monitoring, immunisation support and health education for children under six, pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Anganwadi Worker and Anganwadi Helper posts are among the few government-linked jobs available to women in their own village with a 10th or 12th pass qualification. This guide is written for women who want to understand the role in 2026, including eligibility, duties, how the selection is done at the district level, what the honorarium is and what documents to arrange.

It also includes a scam warning section, because fake Anganwadi recruitment notices are common on social media.

Understanding the Anganwadi Set-Up

Each Anganwadi centre is staffed by one Anganwadi Worker (AWW) and one Anganwadi Helper (AWH). Mini Anganwadi centres in smaller habitations have only a worker. Several centres are supervised by an Anganwadi Supervisor, who reports to the Child Development Project Officer of the block. The scheme is funded jointly by the central and state governments, and the posts are filled by the state Women and Child Development or Social Welfare department.

Workers and helpers are classified as honorary workers, not regular government employees. This means they receive a monthly honorarium rather than a pay scale, and service rules differ from regular posts. Even so, the job offers a stable monthly income, work close to home, social respect and a path to the supervisor post.

Daily Duties of an Anganwadi Worker

  • Opening the centre on time and conducting pre-school activities for children aged three to six years, including play, songs, stories and basic learning.
  • Preparing and distributing supplementary nutrition such as hot cooked meals and take-home rations, and maintaining stock registers.
  • Weighing and measuring children every month, recording growth in the register and the Poshan Tracker app, and referring malnourished children to the health centre.
  • Maintaining a survey register of all households, pregnant women, nursing mothers and children in the area.
  • Assisting the ANM and ASHA worker in immunisation sessions, health check-ups and Village Health and Nutrition Days.
  • Counselling mothers on breastfeeding, complementary feeding, hygiene and family planning.
  • Conducting home visits to newborns and high-risk families.
  • Keeping about ten to twelve registers and submitting monthly progress reports.

The Anganwadi Helper cooks the meal, cleans the centre, brings children from their homes and assists the worker in all activities.

Who Is Eligible

Rules are set by each state, so figures below are typical rather than universal.

Gender: Posts are reserved for women in almost every state.

Residence: The candidate must be a permanent resident of the village, ward or revenue area where the centre is located. This is the most important condition, and a residence certificate is checked carefully.

Education: Anganwadi Worker usually requires a 12th pass, although some states accept a 10th pass in tribal or remote areas. Anganwadi Helper usually requires a 10th pass, with 8th pass accepted in some states. Higher marks and higher qualifications earn extra points in the merit list.

Age: Commonly 18 to 35 years at the time of application, with relaxation of up to 5 years for widows, divorced women, SC, ST and OBC candidates in many states.

Other preferences: States give weightage to widows, destitute women, women from below poverty line families, SC and ST candidates and women whose husbands are disabled. Some states require the candidate to be married and settled in the village.

How Selection Works

Selection is done at the district or project level, not through a state-wide competitive exam. The usual steps are:

  1. The district Women and Child Development office publishes a notice listing vacant centres, usually on the district website, the collectorate notice board and in local newspapers.
  2. Candidates submit an application form, in person or online depending on the state, with self-attested copies of education, age, residence and category documents.
  3. A merit list is prepared using a points system: marks in 10th and 12th, higher qualification, category, marital status, BPL status and sometimes experience as a helper or in self-help groups.
  4. Some states hold a short interview or a counselling session before the Child Development Project Officer.
  5. Objections are invited on the provisional list, then the final list is published and appointment orders are issued by the district programme officer.

Helpers with the required qualification and experience usually get preference when the worker post in the same centre falls vacant.

Honorarium and Benefits

The honorarium has a central component fixed by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and a state top-up that varies widely. The ranges below are indicative monthly totals and differ by state, centre type and years of service.

Post Central Share (Indicative) Typical Total with State Top-Up
Anganwadi Worker (main centre) ₹4,500 ₹7,000 to ₹13,000
Anganwadi Worker (mini centre) ₹3,500 ₹5,000 to ₹10,000
Anganwadi Helper ₹2,250 ₹3,500 to ₹7,500
Anganwadi Supervisor State pay scale ₹20,000 to ₹35,000

The pay figures above for anganwadi worker jobs in india 2026 are indicative only. They reflect commonly reported ranges and vary by employer, city and experience, so confirm the exact offer in writing with the employer or check the first portal under Helpful Links.

Several states pay considerably more than these figures, and many have added performance-linked incentives, festival bonuses and mobile phone allowances. Benefits often include accident and life insurance under government schemes, a retirement gratuity in some states and maternity leave. Confirm the current honorarium and benefits in your state’s latest order.

Documents to Arrange

  • 10th and 12th mark sheets and certificates
  • Birth certificate or school leaving certificate for age proof
  • Permanent residence or domicile certificate for the village or ward
  • Caste certificate for SC, ST or OBC candidates
  • BPL card or income certificate if claiming weightage
  • Marriage certificate, husband’s death certificate or divorce decree if claiming widow or divorced status
  • Aadhaar card, bank passbook and voter ID
  • Self-help group membership proof or helper service certificate where relevant
  • Passport-size photographs and a filled application form

Residence proof is the item most often disputed in objections, so make sure your ration card, voter ID and residence certificate all show the same village and ward.

Working Hours, Conditions and Growth

Centres generally run for about five to six hours in the morning, typically from 9 am to 2 pm or 10 am to 3 pm. Additional time goes into home visits, survey work, register writing and monthly meetings at the project office. Workers increasingly use a smartphone for the Poshan Tracker app, so basic phone skills are important. The work is community-based and socially meaningful, but it also involves dealing with supply shortages, paperwork and sometimes pressure from local groups.

Helpers can become workers when they meet the qualification. Workers with a graduate degree and several years of service can be promoted to Anganwadi Supervisor through departmental quotas, usually 25 to 50 percent of supervisor posts, and the supervisor post carries a regular state pay scale. Training through the department and NIPCCD improves skills in nutrition, early childhood education and record keeping. Experience as an Anganwadi worker is also valued in NGO and health programme jobs.

A Practical Checklist Before Applying

  1. Find out which centre in your village or ward has a vacancy by asking the current worker, the supervisor or the project office. Vacancies arise on retirement, resignation or when new centres are sanctioned.
  2. Collect your residence proof first, because it takes the longest. Apply for a domicile certificate through the tehsil or online citizen service portal if you do not have one.
  3. Get your 10th and 12th mark sheets and category certificates attested, and keep at least four sets of copies.
  4. Read the district notice carefully for the last date, the place of submission and the points system used for the merit list.
  5. Fill the form neatly in the language asked for, attach every document listed and take an acknowledgement receipt when you submit it.
  6. Watch for the provisional merit list and file an objection within the time allowed if your points are wrongly calculated.
  7. Attend the interview or counselling if called, carrying all original documents.

Women who are already active in a self-help group, who have worked as a helper or who have volunteered in health camps often score higher in the interview stage because they understand the community work involved. It also helps to learn the basics of the Poshan Tracker app and growth monitoring before joining, as training time is limited.

Scam Warning: Fake Anganwadi Recruitment

  • Social media posts and websites announcing “all-India Anganwadi recruitment with thousands of posts” and an application fee. Real recruitment is district-wise, and most states charge no fee at all.
  • Agents who promise selection for money because they “know the CDPO”. Merit lists are prepared on documents and points, and they are published for objections.
  • Calls asking for an OTP, PIN or Aadhaar OTP to “confirm” your application or “release the honorarium”.
  • Requests for a deposit for training, uniform, registers or a smartphone before joining. The department provides training and materials free of cost.
  • Pressure to pay immediately through a personal UPI handle or wallet.
  • Fake appointment letters with a department logo delivered on WhatsApp.

Check any notice at the district Women and Child Development office or the Child Development Project Office before applying. If you have paid money or shared an OTP, report it to your bank and the local police.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an unmarried woman apply for an Anganwadi post?

In many states, yes, as long as she is a permanent resident of the area. A few states give preference to married women or require that the candidate’s marital home be in the village. Check your state’s rules.

Is there any written exam for Anganwadi worker?

Most states select on a points-based merit list with an optional interview. A few states have introduced a short written test, so read the district notice carefully.

Can a worker be transferred to another village?

Normally no. The post is tied to the centre in the candidate’s own area, which is why residence proof is so important.

Are Anganwadi workers government employees?

They are honorary workers under a government scheme, not regular employees. Honorarium, leave and retirement benefits are governed by scheme orders, which several states have been improving.

What is the retirement age?

Most states have fixed the retirement age for Anganwadi workers and helpers at 60 or 62 years, with a lump-sum retirement benefit in some states.

Before You Apply

An Anganwadi post is a stable, respected job in your own community that supports children and mothers directly. Keep your residence, education and category documents ready, watch the district notice board and website for vacancies in your area, and apply through the official process only.

Ignore every message that asks for money or an OTP; genuine selection costs nothing but careful paperwork.
