How to Verify a Kuwait Employer 2026: Licence, Sponsor and Contract Checks

By IshanOctober 11, 2026011 Mins Read

Every year thousands of Indian workers accept jobs in Kuwait after a few phone calls and a photo of an offer letter sent on a messaging app. Most of them reach Kuwait and start work as promised. Some arrive to find a different employer, a lower salary, or no job at all. The difference between the two groups is usually one thing: whether the worker checked the employer before paying or travelling.

Checking a Kuwaiti employer is not difficult, but it takes patience and a willingness to ask direct questions. This guide walks through the checks a worker can do from India, the documents a genuine employer will produce, how the sponsor system works, what to look for in the contract, and the role of registered recruitment agents. It is meant for workers in trades, services, retail, technical and office roles.

No single check proves that a job is real. Taken together, however, the steps below make it very hard for a fake employer or a dishonest agent to fool you. Spend a week on verification rather than a year regretting it.

Why Verification Matters More in Kuwait

Kuwait runs a sponsorship system. A foreign worker cannot simply arrive and look for work. A Kuwaiti company or individual must apply for a work permit in the worker’s name, and the worker’s residence in the country is tied to that sponsor. If the sponsor turns out to be a shell company with no real business, the worker can end up with a permit that is cancelled, or with no permit at all, and no legal way to stay or change jobs.

A second reason is the visa trading problem. Some people obtain work permits and sell them to workers through agents, with no real job behind the permit. The worker pays a large sum, lands in Kuwait, and is told to find work on their own. This is illegal and leaves the worker exposed to fines and deportation. Verification is the only protection against it.

Understanding the Sponsor and the Work Permit

In Kuwait, the sponsor is the employer named on your work permit and residence. The Public Authority of Manpower issues the work permit to the employer for a specific worker, job title and salary. The Ministry of Interior then issues the residence permit and, later, the Civil ID. The job title and salary on the permit should match the contract you signed. If they do not, the lower figure often becomes the one that counts in a dispute.

Ask the employer or agent for the work permit number and the name of the sponsoring company as written in Arabic. A genuine employer will provide this without hesitation because the permit has already been approved before the visa is issued. An agent who says the permit “will come later” or who refuses to share the company name is a serious red flag.

There is also a difference between a company sponsor and an individual sponsor. Company sponsorship is normal for trade, technical and service jobs. Individual sponsorship is used mainly for domestic workers. If you are offered a technician job under an individual’s name, ask why.

Checking the Company’s Licence and Existence

Every legitimate business in Kuwait holds a commercial licence that shows the company name, the licensed activity, the address and the owner. Ask for a copy of the licence and compare the name on it with the name on your offer letter and work permit. The licensed activity should match the work you will do. A company licensed only for general trading that is recruiting fifty masons should make you pause.

Confirm the company has a physical address and a landline, not only mobile numbers. Ask the agent for the address and look it up on a map application to see whether an office or yard actually exists there. If you know anyone working in Kuwait, ask them to visit or call the office. Workers already employed by the same company are the best source of truth about pay, accommodation and treatment.

Also check how long the company has existed. Established contractors and service firms usually have years of history, project names and a known client base. A company set up a few months ago that is suddenly hiring in bulk may be genuine, but it deserves closer attention.

Reading the Offer Letter Carefully

A genuine Kuwaiti offer letter is printed on company letterhead with a stamp, a reference number, the date, the job title, the salary, the allowances and the contract term. It is usually signed by an authorised person whose name and designation are printed. Many also carry the commercial licence number. Compare the letter with the contract and the work permit for consistency in job title, salary and company name.

Watch for letters that use a free email address, show no stamp or licence number, contain spelling mistakes in the company name, or promise salaries far higher than the normal range for the role. A fake letter often has a very generic job description and no mention of accommodation, working hours or leave. Treat any letter that arrives only as a screenshot with suspicion until you receive a clean copy.

The Employment Contract: Clauses to Confirm

Kuwait contracts are normally written in Arabic with a translation. The Arabic version controls. Before signing, make sure the contract states the basic salary, each allowance separately, the working hours, the overtime rate, the number of annual leave days, who pays for the return ticket, the probation period, the notice period, and who bears the cost of the medical test, visa and residence permit. By law, the employer pays for the work visa and permit. Any clause that shifts these costs to the worker is a warning sign.

Ask for the contract in advance, not on arrival at the airport. Keep a signed copy with you and a scanned copy in your email. If the contract you are given in Kuwait differs from the one signed in India, do not sign the new one until the agent explains the difference in writing. Many workers lose their negotiating position the moment they sign a second contract.

Using Registered Recruitment Agents

Indian workers going to Kuwait should use recruitment agents registered with the Government of India. Registered agents are bound by rules on the fees they can charge, must give receipts, and can be held responsible if the job turns out to be false. Ask the agent for their registration number and check it on the official list before paying anything. Sub agents working in villages and small towns often operate without any registration and pass workers on to a registered agent for a cut.

A registered agent will show you the demand letter from the Kuwaiti employer, the power of attorney authorising the agent to recruit, and the employer’s licence details. They will also arrange your medical test at an approved centre and explain the visa stamping process. If an agent avoids these steps or asks you to arrange your own visa through a contact, walk away.

A Verification Checklist You Can Follow

The table below summarises what a genuine employer or agent should be able to show you, and what each document proves. Use it as a checklist and tick off each item before paying any fee or booking travel.

Item to check What it should show What it proves
Commercial licence copy Company name, activity, address, owner The company exists and is allowed to do that work
Work permit details Your name, job title, salary, sponsor A permit was actually approved for you
Offer letter and contract Letterhead, stamp, salary, allowances, hours, leave Terms are fixed in writing and match each other
Agent registration number Valid registration with the Indian government Agent is accountable and fees are controlled
Existing worker reference Contact of someone already employed Pay, housing and treatment are as promised

Keep copies of everything in one folder. If any item is missing after two polite requests, treat the job as unverified.

Indicative Pay to Compare Against Offers

One of the quickest ways to spot a fake or exaggerated offer is to compare the salary with the usual range for the role. As a rough guide, helpers and labourers in Kuwait earn around KWD 80 to 130 a month (roughly ₹22,000 to ₹36,000), skilled tradesmen KWD 120 to 220 (roughly ₹33,000 to ₹61,000), technicians KWD 150 to 300 (roughly ₹41,000 to ₹83,000), and supervisors KWD 250 to 500 (roughly ₹69,000 to ₹1,38,000). These are indicative only and vary by employer, experience and package.

An offer of KWD 400 a month for a helper with no experience is not generous; it is almost certainly false. Confirm in writing whether accommodation, food, transport and the annual ticket are included, because these items change the real value of a package by a large amount.

Scam Warning Signs When Verifying an Employer

The most common signs of fraud are a demand for money before any document is shown, a request for a visa fee or security deposit, a medical test that must be done at a specific unregistered clinic that charges in cash, and pressure to pay into a personal UPI or bank account. Be alert to callers who ask for a bank OTP or ATM PIN to “confirm your identity” or to release a visa. No genuine employer or agent ever needs these.

Other signs include an agent who changes the company name midway, an offer that must be accepted within hours, and a refusal to give you the contract before you pay. Genuine Kuwaiti employers do not charge the worker for the visa or the work permit. If you have already paid and realise the job is false, stop all further payments, gather your receipts and messages, and report it to your bank and the local police.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check a Kuwait work permit myself from India?

You can ask the employer or agent for the permit number and sponsor name and compare them with the contract. A registered agent can confirm the permit status with the employer. If nobody will share the details, treat that as an answer in itself.

Is it safe to accept a job under an individual sponsor?

Individual sponsorship is normal for domestic workers such as maids and family drivers. For trade, technical, retail or office roles it is unusual and may indicate visa trading. Ask for a clear explanation and a company licence before going ahead.

What fees can a registered Indian agent charge?

Registered agents may charge only a limited service fee set by government rules, and they must give a receipt. They cannot charge for the visa itself, which the employer pays. Any amount beyond the permitted fee is a warning sign.

What if the contract I get in Kuwait is different from the one I signed in India?

Do not sign the new contract until the difference is explained in writing. Contact the agent and, if needed, the Indian Embassy labour section. Keep both contracts, as the Indian one is evidence of what was promised.

Should I keep a copy of my documents after I arrive?

Yes. Keep a copy of the passport, visa, contract, offer letter and work permit on your phone and in your email. Your employer cannot lawfully keep your passport against your will.

Final Thoughts

Verifying a Kuwaiti employer is about asking for proof and refusing to pay until you get it. A real company with a real vacancy loses nothing by showing you its licence, permit and contract. A fake one cannot.

Take your time, use a registered agent, confirm every figure in writing and keep copies of all documents. Those few habits protect your money, your legal status and your future in Kuwait.
