Teaching Jobs in India 2026: CTET, State TET and Eligibility Basics

By IshanOctober 22, 2026010 Mins Read

Teaching is one of the most stable and respected careers in India. Government and government-aided schools employ lakhs of teachers, and private schools, coaching institutes and online platforms add many more opportunities. A government school teacher receives a fixed pay level, allowances, regular holidays, pension or NPS and a career path to headmaster and education officer posts.

This guide is for graduates, B.Ed and D.El.Ed holders, and students who are planning their path towards a school teaching job in 2026. It explains the Teacher Eligibility Test system, which is the gateway to government school jobs, along with the qualifications you need, the recruitment steps after TET, pay ranges and the documents to keep ready.

A separate section covers frauds in the teaching sector, where fake appointment letters and “approved school” job rackets are common.

What TET Is and Why It Matters

The Right to Education Act requires every teacher of Classes 1 to 8 in a government, aided or recognised private school to pass a Teacher Eligibility Test. The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education and is accepted by central government schools such as Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas and Central Tibetan Schools, by schools in union territories and by many private schools. Each state conducts its own State TET for its government schools.

Passing TET does not give you a job by itself. It is an eligibility certificate. You still have to apply for teacher recruitment exams or interviews held by the state education department, school management or the central school organisation. CTET and most state TET certificates are now valid for life.

Levels of School Teaching Posts

  • Primary teacher (Classes 1 to 5): Teaches all subjects to young children. Requires TET Paper 1.
  • Upper primary or trained graduate teacher (Classes 6 to 8): Teaches a subject group such as Mathematics and Science, Social Studies or Languages. Requires TET Paper 2.
  • Post graduate teacher (Classes 9 to 12): Teaches a single subject at secondary and senior secondary level. TET is not mandatory under the RTE Act for these classes, but many states and central organisations require it or hold their own eligibility exams.
  • Special educators, physical education teachers, art, music and computer teachers: Have their own qualification rules, often with a diploma or degree in the specialised area.
  • Pre-primary or nursery teachers: Mainly in private schools, with a Nursery Teacher Training or Early Childhood Care and Education diploma.

Educational Eligibility Explained

The qualification rules come from the National Council for Teacher Education and are applied by every recruiting body. In simple terms:

For Classes 1 to 5: Senior secondary (12th) with at least 50 percent marks and a two-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed), or a four-year Bachelor of Elementary Education, or 12th with 50 percent and a two-year Diploma in Education (Special Education). Graduates with a B.Ed are also eligible subject to completing a bridge course as specified in current rules.

For Classes 6 to 8: A bachelor’s degree with a two-year D.El.Ed, or a bachelor’s degree with at least 50 percent marks and a B.Ed, or 12th with 50 percent and a four-year integrated B.A. B.Ed or B.Sc. B.Ed. Relaxation of 5 percent in marks is given to reserved category candidates in most states.

For Classes 9 to 12: A master’s degree in the subject with at least 50 percent marks and a B.Ed is the common requirement for PGT posts, while TGT posts for Classes 9 and 10 usually need a bachelor’s degree in the subject plus a B.Ed.

Age: Teacher recruitment exams usually have an upper age limit of 35 to 40 years for general candidates with standard relaxation. CTET itself has no upper age limit.

CTET and State TET Exam Pattern

CTET has two papers, each with 150 multiple-choice questions for 150 marks in 150 minutes, with no negative marking. Paper 1 covers Child Development and Pedagogy, Language 1, Language 2, Mathematics and Environmental Studies, with 30 questions each. Paper 2 covers Child Development and Pedagogy, Language 1, Language 2 and either Mathematics and Science (60 questions) or Social Studies (60 questions). You can appear for both papers in the same session.

General category candidates need 60 percent (90 marks) to pass, and reserved categories need 55 percent in most states. State TETs follow a similar structure but include the state language as a compulsory paper and may add a state-specific general knowledge section. Some states conduct TET and the recruitment exam together as one combined test.

From TET to a Job: Recruitment Steps

  1. Clear CTET or your state TET for the level you want to teach.
  2. Watch for recruitment notifications from the state education department, the district education office, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Army or Sainik schools, or aided school managements.
  3. Apply online with your TET certificate number, academic details and category certificates.
  4. Appear for the recruitment exam, which usually has a subject paper, a pedagogy paper and a general awareness section. Some states and central organisations also hold an interview or a demonstration class.
  5. Clear document verification, where your degrees, B.Ed or D.El.Ed and TET certificate are checked against the original institution records.
  6. Receive a posting order from the department and join the allotted school, usually with a probation period of one to two years.

Pay Ranges for Teachers

Government teacher salaries follow the central or state pay matrix with grade-wise levels. Gross monthly pay adds dearness allowance and house rent allowance to basic pay. Private school pay varies widely by city, school board and reputation. The ranges below are indicative and differ by state, employer, city and experience.

Post Typical Pay Level Indicative Gross Monthly (INR)
Primary teacher (government) Level 6 ₹45,000 to ₹60,000
Trained graduate teacher (government) Level 7 ₹55,000 to ₹75,000
Post graduate teacher (government) Level 8 ₹65,000 to ₹85,000
Contract or para teacher (state schemes) Fixed honorarium ₹15,000 to ₹35,000
Private school teacher School scale ₹12,000 to ₹50,000

Treat the salary ranges in this teaching jobs in india 2026 guide as a rough starting point rather than a promise. Employers set their own pay, and allowances differ, so verify the figures with the employer or the official portal listed under Helpful Links.

Many states first appoint teachers on a fixed probationary pay for two or three years before full scale. Confirm in writing whether the post is regular, contractual or scheme-based, and what the probation pay and leave rules are.

Documents to Keep Ready

  • 10th and 12th mark sheets and certificates
  • Graduation and post graduation mark sheets and degree certificates
  • B.Ed, D.El.Ed or other professional qualification certificate and mark sheets from an NCTE-recognised institution
  • CTET or state TET certificate and mark sheet
  • Caste, EWS, PwBD or other category certificate in the prescribed format
  • Domicile certificate for state posts
  • Aadhaar, PAN and bank account details
  • Recent photographs, scanned signature and printed application forms and admit cards

Recruiting bodies verify B.Ed and D.El.Ed certificates with the issuing university. Degrees from unrecognised or non-NCTE institutions are rejected, so confirm your college’s recognition before enrolling.

Working Conditions and Growth

Government school teachers typically work from about 8 am to 2 pm or 9 am to 3 pm on school days, with summer and winter vacations. Apart from classroom teaching, teachers handle attendance, mid-day meal records, parent meetings, examination duties and sometimes election or census work. Rural postings are common in the early years, with transfers to towns based on seniority and state transfer policy.

Growth follows a clear ladder: primary teacher to head teacher, TGT to PGT through departmental or open exams, and then to vice principal, principal and block or district education officer posts. Teachers who complete M.Ed, NET or a PhD can move into teacher training institutes and colleges.

For preparation, begin with the Child Development and Pedagogy section because it is common to both TET papers and to most recruitment exams. Read the NCERT textbooks of the classes you plan to teach, since subject questions are set at that level. Solve previous CTET papers to understand how pedagogy questions are framed, and practise the language papers with short comprehension passages and grammar exercises. Keep a weekly revision schedule and attempt at least one full mock test every week in the months before the exam. Candidates who also prepare the state general knowledge section early find the state recruitment exam much easier.

Scam Warning Signs in Teacher Recruitment

  • Fake “appointment letters” from a Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodaya or state school that ask for a registration, bond, uniform or document verification fee. Genuine appointment orders never ask for money.
  • Agents promising a government teacher post for a lump sum because they “know someone in the education department”. Recruitment is through exams and merit only.
  • Calls asking for an OTP, PIN or Aadhaar OTP to “verify your TET certificate” or “release your posting”. Officials never ask for these.
  • Pressure to pay quickly through a personal UPI handle or wallet for a seat in a “quota” or “backlog list”.
  • Private schools or institutes that demand a security deposit or training fee before joining, or that hold back your original certificates.
  • Fake TET or B.Ed certificates sold online; these are detected during verification and lead to criminal cases.

Verify every notification on the education department or recruiting organisation’s own website and never pay anyone outside the official application fee. If you have paid money or shared an OTP, report it to your bank and the local police.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CTET valid for state government school jobs?

Many states accept CTET along with their own TET, but some require their state TET for state posts. Check the recruitment notification of the state where you want to work.

How long is a TET certificate valid?

CTET certificates and most state TET certificates issued in recent years are valid for life. Older certificates with a seven-year validity have been extended in most states, but confirm the current rule.

Can I appear for CTET during the final year of B.Ed?

Yes. Candidates who are appearing in the final year of a B.Ed or D.El.Ed are allowed to sit for CTET, but they must complete the qualification before applying for recruitment.

Is B.Ed enough to teach primary classes?

Under current rules, B.Ed holders can be considered for primary posts in some states subject to a bridge course and specific conditions, while D.El.Ed is the standard route. Check the latest NCTE and state notifications as this rule has changed over time.

Do private schools require TET?

Recognised private schools are expected to appoint TET-qualified teachers for Classes 1 to 8 under the RTE Act. Many good private schools ask for CTET along with a B.Ed when hiring.

Final Thoughts

A teaching career in India begins with the right qualification and a TET pass, followed by patient preparation for the recruitment exam of your chosen state or organisation. Study the child development and pedagogy sections seriously, because they appear in every stage.

Apply only through official portals, keep your certificates verified and organised, and ignore anyone who promises a posting for money.
